I, Jim Factor, have taught mathematics and computer science for 23 years at various colleges and universities. Presently, I am teaching at Alverno College in Milwaukee, WI.  After receiving my B.A. in Mathematics and Russian from St. Louis University in 1972 and my Ph.D. from St. Louis University in Mathematics in 1978, I worked in industry for eleven years at McDonnell Douglas Corp. in St. Louis (now Boeing Corp) applying my mathematics background to solve problems in CAD/CAM and corporate data management.

Having learned about GeoGebra at the 2009 ICTCM conference, I took an earlier version of this workshop in the summer of 2009. Using an applet that I developed at this workshop, I gave a presentation entitled “The Geometric Construction and Animation of Bézier Curves” at the International Conference on the use of Technology in Collegiate Mathematics (ICTCM) on March 12, 2010. This presentation illustrated how to start with a geometric construction and derive the algebraic description of a curve. The GeoGebra software was used in the construction of a geometric framework and in the illustration of an animation that showed how the framework generated the curve.

I have been writing GeoGebra applets using version 3.2 for my mathematics classes. In addition, I have been writing some applets using the beta version 5.0 for my linear algebra class. From this workshop, I hope to learn more about the capabilities of GeoGebra 4.0 and generally improve my GeoGebra skills.
