Linda Fahlberg-Stojanovska wrote this ggb which shows how to erase the traces without going to Refresh View. The trick is to position a small picture next to the check box. Then to that position point (Object Properties, Position) add the point (ShowTrace*0,0) where ShowTrace is the name of the boolean checkbox. Finally, the pic must be declared a Background object but I cannot remember why. Whenever you check the box, either turning it on or off, the traces will be erased because GeoGebra has to recalculate the position of the pic but that position does not change. (Stupid GeoGebra.)
